How to change the default search engine in Internet Explorer IE8 from Bing to Google

Well I do not hate Bing deep in my heart but I love Google. And I know it the same with my other friends. Many of us want to change the default search engine of IE 8 to Google.

Follow the below steps to change the default search engine in IE8:

Click on the triangle on the right side of the search box in IE 8 window and you’ll get a little menu of options to appear:

Choose "Manage Search Providers" and it’ll pop up a window with your current search providers and a bunch of other customizable add-ons and settings:

It’s hard to see, but at the bottom there’s a link for "Find more search providers…". That’s what you want. Click on it and it’ll take you to one of Microsoft‘s lesser known sites: IE Add Ons.com (specifically for search helpers):

Scroll down or search the site to find Google. The entry is a bit curiously worded:

Click on the big "Add to Internet Explorer" button and as you would hope, a security confirmation window shows up:

Check the “make this my default search provider”. Now click on "Add" to continue and the process will complete and you can see Google on the search box.

  1. Hi, Thank you ..was a very elaborate post and I liked it very much …keep the Good work on

  2. It didn’t change the Bing search box because the Google add on was an ‘Accelerator’ and it needed to be a ‘Search Provider’. When I click on Tools in the browser and manage add-ons Bing is the only thing in the Search Provider area! :(

  3. You need to go here and use the Google link on the left side: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/searchguide/en-en/default.mspx#

  4. * Open registry editor
    * Search for “https://www.bing.com/search?q=”
    * You will find an entry under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Search Scopes/{…..}”
    * Replace “https://www.bing.com/search?q=” with “https://www.google.co.in/search?q=”. Please make sure you keep rest of the URL same.
    * Restart IE

    Thats it. Not your default search is google :-)
